Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the option to contest certain rulings made by the official, following the system already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move arrives only a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
