Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the number of new jobs created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication once the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that showed that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
