European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has halted attempts to reduce security grants to states that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The official stated the action was “a further instance” of tying government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans prior to the new year, coinciding with an active border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to accept dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, after concluding a formal agreement with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the removal of a political figure’s name from a well-known cultural institution in the capital.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a wider ideology in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
