A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's key government projects.
The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” stated the national leader.
The president confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose term finished the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised ongoing concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was requested pending a full safety audit. The party declared that the situation "requires swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these strategic projects.
